A February 16, 1917 reviewer in Variety apparently found this version rather subdued, which resulted in a judgment that the film was acceptable if unexceptional. However, this reviewer illustrated the widely held cinematic view that Hawthorne’s classic tale was open to revision by suggesting that “[a] wide latitude could have been employed in the witchery or witchcraft scenes from the early Puritanical days that the tale speaks of to make this picture outstanding . . ”10 Although Hawthorne did not stress the possible witchcraft elements of the story, his original vision could apparently have been made even more “outstanding” if Harbaugh had exceeded the mandate that Hawthorne provided.

At the same time, we must conclude that – any remote similarities to Hawthorne’s text notwithstanding – the Moore/Joffe´ version is the clearest evidence to 38 Michael Dunne date that filmmakers continually revision The Scarlet Letter in the terms provided by their own cultures.
