Though it may appear to be an anti-modern reaction it is just as modern an idea and, it is argued, lies in a symbiotic relationship with dynamic modernity. Traditionalism exists in the same discourse or narrative. It relies on concepts of historical change and human ability to control events in a way that is intrinsically modern. Along similar lines Brett argued that, it is no longer sufficient to describe the backward glance of nineteenth century culture as reactionary, escapist or anti-modern 20 Modern conservation 122 .

The alternative is described by terms such as ‘museumification’ or ‘Disneyfication’. These are pejorative terms for approaches that either resist all change or only accommodate change that involves reproduction of historic forms and styles. The historical perspective at the heart of orthodox conservation denies that urban management or change in this way is the authentic expression of contemporary culture. This is the very form of ideology that Robert Adam has challenged (see above). I now move to look briefly at two forms of method that have been applied to the conservation of places: townscape and urban morphology.

Aesthetic factors 4 and picturesque composition have also been significant, however, and these 5 are recurrent themes in English architecture and town planning in particular. 6 The significance of the picturesque and visual to English design and architecture 7 has been noted by writers across the generations (Pevsner 1956; Bandini 1992; 8 Esher 1981). These broader disciplines have been important in the management 9 of the historic environment, especially where the scale of consideration shifted 10 from the architectural object to wider ensembles of buildings and to ‘places’.
